How to edit a PDF online for free

The Reportix free online PDF editor brings everyday document changes into one workspace: correct supported original text, add a note, mark a review area, place a company stamp, or organize pages before downloading a revised copy. This guide explains what each tool changes, how to get a clean result, and when a different workflow is more suitable.

Edit existing PDF text or add text to a PDF

Edit existing text reads supported text objects already stored in the PDF. Select an outlined smart line or word, enter the replacement, and apply the change. The editor replaces the selected original content rather than hiding the old words behind a rectangle. It retains the original font where available, with the original size, color and position. If a character is unavailable in the embedded font, it automatically chooses a matching font or a rendered fallback.

Add text creates a separate item above the page. Use it for a reviewer’s note, reference number, label or missing detail. You can choose a font, size and color, and move the added item without changing the underlying document. Added text and other annotations are flattened into the page overlay when exported. Rare system-rendered replacements are also flattened, while normal original-font and matching-font replacements remain text.

Pages open at 100% zoom. Use the zoom controls when you want a different view, or click the percentage to return to 100%. Fit page remains available as an optional view.

A scanned page is different: its words may be pixels in a photograph rather than text objects. Text converted to outlines or stored inside grouped artwork can also be unavailable to this version’s original-text tool. In those cases, use the source document or an OCR workflow before expecting text replacement.

How to edit text in a PDF

Choose Open PDF and select an unprotected PDF, or try the built-in sample.
Open the required page, then choose Edit existing text. Editable text blocks receive outlines.
Click a line or word to open its replacement text. Check the retained font shown in the dialog.
Select Smart lines to join nearby letters automatically, or Words / tight groups for smaller selections. Replace the selected text, then select Apply text change. If the original font lacks a new character, the editor automatically expands the available font or uses a matching style. Earlier edits remain in the session while you continue working.
Check the page at a readable zoom and choose Download PDF to save a revised copy.

PDFs are fixed-layout documents. A longer replacement does not automatically push neighboring words or paragraphs onto a new line. Keep replacement lengths similar where possible, and review nearby content for overlap. For a full paragraph rewrite or major layout changes, editing the original Word or design file usually produces a more predictable result.

Add a stamp to a PDF—or stamp all pages at once

Use Stamp to create a text stamp such as APPROVED, REVIEWED, RECEIVED, DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. Change its wording and color, and add an optional date or reference line. You can also upload a stamp image. A transparent PNG is useful when you want the page background to remain visible around your stamp.

With Repeat on all pages switched on, the editor takes you to page 1. Click to place the stamp. Every page receives a linked copy at the same distance from the top-left corner, with the same width and height in PDF units. This is a fixed position and size, not a percentage-based placement. For mixed page sizes, placement is kept inside the common area that fits the pages.

Moving or resizing a linked stamp updates its copies. Deleting a linked stamp removes its copies throughout the document; Undo restores the action. Switch repeat off before placing stamps that should appear only on individually selected pages. Turning the switch off affects new placements; it does not detach a group that was already linked.

Position a review stamp once on page 1. Check both a portrait and a landscape page before exporting.

A visual stamp records a visible label. It does not authenticate approval or create a certificate-based digital signature.

Highlight PDF text, draw and match whiteout colors

The cover tool, also called Whiteout / cover, can use any selected color. Choose from 12 presets, use the custom color picker, or select Pick page background and click a clean part of the page. Sampling near the area you want to cover helps match pale gray, cream or colored backgrounds without guessing a color value.

A flat cover works best on a flat background. It cannot perfectly reconstruct a photograph, gradient, texture or patterned paper. Sample away from letters, borders and shadows, then inspect the covered area before downloading. Keep opacity at 100% when you want the cover to be fully opaque.

Covering is not secure redaction. The underlying text or image may remain recoverable in the PDF. Use a dedicated redaction process when the goal is to permanently remove confidential information.

Pencil and highlight each have 12 preset colors plus a custom picker. Choose a pencil width that stays legible at the intended print size. Highlights start with transparency so the page remains visible; adjust opacity if needed. Use a consistent color meaning—for example, yellow for review, blue for information, and red for a point requiring attention.

Organize PDF pages: rotate, reorder, duplicate or delete

The thumbnail panel helps you navigate a document without repeatedly scrolling through full pages. Page actions let you rotate, duplicate, move, remove or insert a blank page. Use them to put attachments in the intended order or correct a page that opens sideways.

Undo and redo are useful while comparing a change. They work within the current editing session; they are not a permanent version history. Keep the original file separately and download the revised PDF before refreshing or closing the tab. Opening a different document can discard unsaved edits.

For a closeout package, a useful sequence is: arrange the pages, correct small text errors, add review notes, place a repeated stamp, then inspect the first, last and any differently sized pages. For a simple letter, you may only need a reference note and a visual signature. Use only the tools the document actually needs.

Before you send or print the edited PDF

Read the replacement text. Confirm names, numbers, dates and punctuation against the intended source.
Inspect the layout. Look for long text overlapping nearby content, missing glyphs, or a stamp covering important information.
Check every page type. Repeated stamps need a review on mixed paper sizes and orientations.
Open the downloaded copy. Confirm that the file opens in your normal PDF reader and that the visible result matches your edits.
Keep the source. Save the original separately so you can compare versions or restart a change.

How files and website services are handled

This editor processes PDF content and stamp images in your browser. The editor code does not upload those files to a document-processing server. Editing state stays in the current tab’s memory, so downloading is the step that saves your work to a file.

When this page is hosted on Reportix.co, Google AdSense and Google Analytics can make network requests for advertising and site measurement. That is separate from the local PDF editing process. Document text, filenames and stamp images are not included in this editor’s analytics configuration. Only edit documents you are authorized to modify. A visible signature image or status stamp does not verify the identity of its creator. Existing certificate signatures and interactive document features may require checks in a dedicated PDF application after editing.

Free online PDF editor: frequently asked questions

Can I edit a PDF online for free without signing up?

Yes. Open a PDF in Reportix, make your changes and download the edited file without creating an account or paying a subscription. Downloads have no editor watermark. Supported text can be replaced directly; scanned pages need OCR before their words can be edited.

How do I sign a PDF or add an image?

Choose Sign to draw or type a visual signature, then place and resize it on the page. Choose Image to add a PNG, JPEG or WebP file, such as a logo. A visual signature is not a certificate-based digital signature.

Why can I select some words but not others?

PDFs often store letters separately. Smart lines joins nearby letters using their baseline, spacing, font and color. Words / tight groups gives a smaller selection. Different rows, styles and detected table rules stay separate. Text stored as images, outlines or unsupported grouped artwork is still unavailable to this version.

How are new characters matched to the original font?

An embedded font may contain only the characters used when the PDF was created. The editor now checks glyph coverage and automatically reuses the complete original font when available, or uses a matching font. Exact visual matching depends on which font data is available. Rare scripts use a rendered replacement instead of blocking the edit.

Can this editor automatically reflow paragraphs?

No. Original text editing replaces a supported text block in its fixed position. It does not provide Word-style paragraph reflow, page repagination or automatic table resizing.

How do I place the same stamp on every page?

Choose Stamp, prepare a text or uploaded image stamp, switch Repeat on all pages on, and place it on page 1. The linked copies keep the same position and size. Move or resize the stamp to update the copies together.

How do I stamp only selected pages?

Switch repeat off before placing a new stamp. Open each required page and place the stamp manually. Previously created linked stamp groups remain linked until removed.

Can I use a cover color other than white?

Yes. Choose Whiteout / cover, select a preset or custom color, or sample a clean background point from the page. A solid cover cannot recreate a gradient or photographic background exactly.

Are highlights and pencil marks still editable after export?

They remain editable as added items during this session. On download, the editor flattens added annotations into a visual page overlay. Reopening that exported file does not recreate the original editable annotation objects.

Why will my password-protected PDF not open?

This version does not provide a password-entry or unlocking workflow. Use an authorized, unlocked copy. It does not bypass document protection.

Is there a watermark or subscription for PDF downloads?

This version exports without an editor watermark or subscription prompt. The page may display advertising when hosted on Reportix.co.

What should I do if the result looks different in another reader?

Compare the downloaded copy with the original, check the affected page at a readable zoom, and try a non-sensitive sample. When reporting a problem through Contact Us, include the tool name, browser, steps and error message. Describe the document instead of sending confidential content.
